How will I know if I want or need pain medication and labor?

Unmedicated....Epidural....something else that's not epidural....no matter what your thoughts are on medication in labor, it's a decision that each pregnant person has to make. This is the first overview of what that decision can be like and how to help yourself navigate that space.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Pain medications carry risks and benefits, but not moral value! No method of birthing is inherently better than another! That said, nothing in your body in terms of medication is the lowest-risk scenario. So weighing those risks with your health history and labor desires  is your first step toward supporting yourself in this decision.

  • Think through what your game plan is and evaluate what it would be like if that game plan needs to change

  • How are you strategically setting yourself up for that game plan to happen?

  • If a change of plan is needed or wanted, how do you want that change to be navigated and supported?

  • What is your personal risk and health history around possible medications? This helps you to not have to try to weigh this in between contractions.
