Planning Q3 in Your Doula Business

  • Transcript

Welcome to doula tips and tips. This podcast is a place where we answer one question about doula work, both to support you and to help you support your clients. I'm Kaylee Harrod. I've been supporting families in this perinatal space since my oldest was born, 12, nearly 13 years ago.

I am a birth and postpartum doula childbirth educator, La Leche League leader, and a doula coach. I love guiding and supporting doulas as they work out their doula business. It is a tremendous joy to be trusted in this way.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Hello and welcome back to doula tips and tips. When you are listening to this, I am probably sleeping because I am probably jet lagged from being in a different time zone for the last seven days.

And I can't tell you how excited I am about that. I have hopefully had the most lovely vacation with my parents and siblings and two of my beautiful nieces and my own kiddos and seeing a state that I've never been to and I'm really pumped about it.

So this episode is about planning ahead. Now last episode we talked about evaluating your year to date. If you have not listened to that yet, please go listen to that first. So that is episode 239, just the one that came out last Friday.

So go ahead and listen to that and then come back to this one so that you can look at what you're going to do next. Okay now one thing I mentioned in the last episode is that I do coaching calls to help with strategy like this.

And so if you're looking at your year so far and you're looking at your year ahead and you're incredibly overwhelmed or you're sort of stuck and not sure where you should be going, please look into show notes and book one of those calls or even just send me a quick message on Instagram so we can connect and talk about what would be a realistic thing to do in terms of next steps.

Okay now planning ahead to quarter three I want you to look at if your revenue is good where it is or if it needs to change. Now one of the things I asked you to evaluate in the last episode is how is your client load?

So you know let's say you want to have three clients a month and you've gotten there right and so now you have three clients a month, amazing. But what you thought was going to be sufficient money has not in fact been sufficient money.

Well then you need to continue having those three clients a month but you need to raise what that costs and you can do that anytime. You do not have to do it at a particular time of year or at the beginning of the year or any of that.

If currently your revenue is not sustaining the business in the way that it needs to, I want you to raise your rates. So think about that. Can you raise your rates? Should you raise your rates? What would that look like?

The second thing you're looking at is should you begin to add new services? Are there things that you could add on to your business that you are not currently doing? The third thing I want you to look at is how can you be a better boss for yourself?

Like are you giving yourself time off? Are you planning in times when not everybody is due? Are you making sure that you have like important family stuff set aside? I do not want you burning yourself out in the next quarter of this year.

Okay so this is short and sweet in part because I want it to prompt you to think through the things that you need to plan. Now if this is overwhelming for you, you need some guidance on it and that's okay.

Please do connect with me so that we can work on that together. If you just want to hear more about business and kind of get some tips and best practices coming into your inbox, sign up for our newsletter.

That comes out every other Friday and you can get it straight to your inbox. It shares all kinds of useful tips for your doula business and it's the first place that I announce when I have a new class, a new training, a new free thing that's coming up and I do have a lot of those happening in the fall.

I have a lot that's planned out for the fall that I'm super excited about and I don't want you to miss out on those things. So your homework from today which I know is not what I normally do is to evaluate your year if you have not yet and then plan ahead.

If you are stuck in that book a coaching call with me so that we can plan ahead together. Okay now I am so excited for you to dive into these rerun episodes. I would love to hear how you're liking them.

Connect with me at Herrad doula. I will be hanging out over there still some this summer and I'll be showing you how I hang out with my kiddos, how I you know swim and chill and go get ice cream and all of that fun summer stuff that I only have so many summers left to do with them and so I will be showing you what that looks like and how I prioritize that.

So I'm excited for that and I'm excited to hear from you how your planning is going and I will see you in the next episode.
