No Question is a Stupid Question!

Welcome to doula Tips and Tits. This podcast is a place where we answer one question about doula work, both to support you and to help you support your clients. I'm Kaylee Herat. I've been supporting families in this perinatal space since my oldest was born 12 nearly 13 years ago. I am a birth and postpartum doula childbirth educator, La Leche League Leader and a doula coach. I love guiding and supporting doulas as they work out their doula business. It is a tremendous joy to be trusted in this way. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Have you ever asked a question that you genuinely did not know? And had someone answer in a way that made you feel like an absolute idiot for asking the question in the first place? Yeah, I've had that happen, too. I hate that feeling. To be honest with you. I really love asking questions. I am a question asker. Because I like clarity. I like to fully understand. And so I will ask clarifying questions about almost anything. That's just my jam. That's what I do. However, some people answer those questions in a way that they might as well be like, yeah, you idiot. And that does not feel good. Right? It does not feel good to feel like that's something you should already know. That's essentially the kind of attitude behind those right. Now I get that not everyone is flowery. Not everyone is like, Oh, such a great question, right. But I think sometimes going into something new can feel even more vulnerable and raw when you're asking questions, because you're not sure if people are going to answer you in a way that's like, Yeah, you should already know that. Especially because you already feel a good heaping dose of impostor syndrome, feeling like you don't belong there. Because you don't really know what you're doing, right? When I think about doula coaching, I think about having a safe space to know nothing. Now, obviously, you do probably know something, right? So I'm not saying that to be insulting. What I mean is, there's no stupid question. There's nothing that you could ask that would be something that would be insulted or like, you should already know that, obviously. So it's a safe space to be like, Huh, what does that term mean? Right? I want to share a funny story with you from my early doula days. So when I was a new doula, I had not learned anything, not one single thing about baby positioning. I had never heard about it, like it was not something I knew at all. And I had a client, one of my earliest clients had an OP baby, which means posterior, so their spine is up against the spine of the pregnant person. And so this baby was huge. Like, I think he was like nine and a half pounds, I don't remember his exact weight. And he was posterior, meaning that he was coming through just in a harder way to come through the pelvis. And I was working with this midwife that I was like, kind of geeking out about because I had heard like such amazing things about them. And I was like, Oh, my gosh, I'm getting to work with this midwife. It's so amazing. This is my first time ever even seeing this midwife. So I was just like, fangirling big time. And my client I remember my client saying, later after the birth to the midwife, why do you think it took so long for me to push like, Why do you think it was so hard for me to push? And the midwife said, Well, this happens when babies are Opie. And my client said, What's Opie? And I chimed in, overdue, like, overtime over I don't even know. I was just like, I was delirious for one because I hadn't slept. I'd been there all night. But I was like, so confident in my answer, and the midwife looked at me kind of like, what, and then said, it's posterior, like when your baby's back is up against your back. And I was like, Huh, okay. But then I was like, I need to learn what that means. Right? And I remember being like, Oh, I don't know that lingo. I should probably know that. Now. I went on to do tons of births with that medical, that midwife. She's amazing. She thinks I'm amazing. And they don't hold that against me. Right. My clients didn't hold that against me. No one held that against me. However, it was something that I was super embarrassed about for a long time. Because I was like, Oh, I guess I should have known that. Obviously. I should know that. I should know what that means. So what I want you to think about when you think about the doula coaching is a growing your business. This, of course, be helping you dream bigger than you're dreaming now and think about how you can strategically and sustainably get to those dreams, but then see a safe place to be like, what does this term mean? I hear people say it and I don't know what it is. Because if you don't have a safe space to ask questions like that, you are going to have more questions than you have answers which does not serve you in your business. This is your last invitation to join this September group. You do not have to join it, you can figure this stuff out on your own. But I would love to help you figure it out. I would love to guide you through this. It is part of my passion to do that. And also I know that it's easier. I've done it by myself and I've done it with guidance and guidance is just always better. Okay. There's a link to join the program to learn more about the program to book a call with me about the program in the shownotes. But it starts in a week and a half. So you're going to need to do that quickly. I would love to talk to you answer your questions help you discern if this is the right time for you, and even just connect and get to know you a little bit. I love encouraging annoying doulas, and I would love to do that with you. Okay, I'll talk to you in the next episode.

No questions are stupid questions. You should have a safe space to know nothing and literally ask anything! Doula trainings do not leave you an absolute expert. There is still a steep learning curve. I would love to be your guide, your coach and your safe place to ask silly or otherwise embarrassing questions!

Quote from the show:
